How will you help?

It costs nearly £10,000 a month for us to do God’s work in this place …..

Could you become a new donor and set up a standing order or if you currently give this way, could you increase your current giving? We are grateful to those few members of St John’s who have already taken this step.

Thank you to everyone who has helped St. Johns financially and through gifting their time and talents through the Covid-19 crisis in recent months. It is appreciated that in many cases this cannot have been easy. Your generosity has been received with sincere thanks and has been vital to keeping our church alive and flourishing.

It was reported to the PCC last month, however, that from January we anticipate our expenditure may well exceed our income by as much as £3,500 a month. Repairs to the spire last year mean we no longer have any reserves to absorb future shortfalls so clearly this is unsustainable unless we do something about it now. We are actively working on ways to raise funds and cut expenditure, but we also need your help.

Our Giving page has further information and explains the ways you can choose to support our church. If you are able to help or need any further information please contact us at [email protected] or [email protected]. We are hopeful that together we can close ‘the gap’ in our finances and ensure that we can continue God’s work in these challenging times.

Thank you for your continued support,

Rev Lu Gale (Vicar), Chris Nelson (Treasurer) and Janet Martin (Gift Aid Secretary)

The Parish Giving Scheme – have you registered yet?

As you will have heard, we’re encouraging everyone to register for the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS).  Whether you’re new to St Johns, someone that regularly donates via the website or contactless machine in church, or have a standing order set up with your bank, then please consider registering for PGS now at https://www.parishgiving.org.uk/donors/find-your-parish/shirley-st-john-the-evangelist-croydon/.

Why PGS?

There are many benefits to PGS, including:

  • Secure and Safe method of payment by regular direct debit
  • Donations can be linked to inflation (if you wish) and PGS will contact you annually to consider the level of your pledge
  • There are NO FEES so every penny you donate comes to the church (unlike standing orders, for which we do incur bank charges; or contactless donations which also have transaction charges).
  • PGS claim and pay the gift aid to us automatically each month, reducing our administration and improving cashflow.

Where can I find more information?

The PGS website – https://www.parishgiving.org.uk/home/ – has lots more information and guidance available to help you.  Or you can speak to a Church Warden, Janet Martin or Becky O’Neal, or email Becky directly on [email protected].

How do I register?

It’s really quick and simple to register online at: https://www.parishgiving.org.uk/donors/find-your-parish/shirley-st-john-the-evangelist-croydon/.  This link takes you directly to the Shirley St Johns page, from where you simply click on the ‘Give now’ button (on the left and/or bottom of the screen) and follow the instructions on screen to set up your regular gift.

First, you’ll be asked to set up and activate a website account with PGS so that you can log-in securely.  Next, you’ll be guided through a simple form to provide your personal bank details, the value and frequency of your gift, the option to add Gift Aid, and you can choose whether to increase your gift annually by the rate of inflation.  It only takes a few minutes to complete these steps online. Then, you’ll be able to log-in at any time to review your giving and personal details.

Alternatively, if you would prefer to complete the set up by telephone you can call PGS directly on 0333 002 1271, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm and a PGS representative will take down all the information they need to complete your Direct Debit instruction for you. They will also ask about your preferences for opting in to Gift Aid, if you are eligible, and whether you would like to increase your gift annually by the rate of inflation.  The call usually takes about 10 minutes to complete. They will then send you a confirmation of your new gift by post or email.

Our parish name is Shirley, St John the Evangelist, and our parish code is 370637373.

Thank you to everyone that has already registered and gives so generously.

Giving Campaign 2021 – Information – St John the Evangelist, Shirley (stjohnsshirley.org.uk)

Rev. Lu writes: These last 18 months have been so difficult for many of us and we are tired, bruised and bereaved. Yet in the middle of the chaos God has been our strength and we have continued to gather for worship whether it has been online or in person. We believe that Jesus Christ is our past, present and future. Please help us to continue to be a light of hope in a world that needs Christ’s message of love, peace and joy. Thank you for all that you already do and I pray that you will support us into God’s future. May God bless each of us.

Parish Support Fund – Together we can

What is the Parish Support Fund (PSF)?

The PSF resources the cost of clergy and support to each parish in the Diocese of Southwark. https://southwark.anglican.org/giving/parish-support-fund/ has full details including good news stories funded by the PSF.

Where do the resources come from?

Each year parishes in the Diocese of Southwark are invited to make a pledge to the PSF.

What does this mean for St John’s?

This September our PCC will be deciding how much money we can pledge to the PSF which is realistic, challenging and generous.

How much did St John’s pledge last year?

Our pledge to the PSF was £60,000 (£5000 per month). The Diocese of Southwark suggested amount was £80,000. An underpayment of £20,000.

Why did St John’s underpay?

We had significant expenditure due to the Spire repairs and other essential restoration to the stonework of our Church.

How much is our suggested amount this year?

£81,900 (£6825 per month)

How do we ensure that we pay our expected amount to the PSF this year?

Whether you come to St John’s in person, via our streamed services, or visit loved ones in our churchyard, please share in the cost of our ministry and mission. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us just how much we rely on our Church family and our own Rev Lu Gale. Please help us to continue our Ministry at St John’s by committing to a regular financial contribution.

For further details or to confirm your financial support please contact Janet on 07722 240263 / [email protected] or Becky [email protected]
