About St John the Evangelist
The parish of St John the Evangelist, Shirley is at the south-eastern edge of Croydon and is part of the Addington Deanery. Croydon is the most populous
London Borough, one of the most varied and diverse boroughs. We welcome all members of the community to join in worship with us.

St. John’s has an open altar, and members of all Christian denominations are always invited to share the Christ-given Eucharistic gifts of bread and wine with our congregation. Our overall worship patterns have been described as ‘liberal catholic’ and ‘informally formal’ – Common Worship, with permitted variants; Hymns Ancient and Modern, New Standard, Contemporary Hymns and Worship Songs. Incense is used as an aid to devotion on major feasts.

Sunday Worship
The Sunday service comprises of said Eucharist on Sundays at 8am. A Children’s service at 9am has typically around 30 in attendance. Children range
in ages from babies upwards. Common Worship Choral Eucharist at 10.00am with typically over 50 communicants. Baptisms are usually held within the 10.00am Eucharist.

The choir in the past has given special performances of themed music and readings; sung at regularly at Southwark Cathedral and held charity fundraising concerts of both sacred and secular items including carol singing in the community.

St John’s is a Gilbert Scott Grade II listed church. It has a choir legacy of over 100 years with a dedicated SATB choir of approximately 20 members ranging in ability, some with decades of experience. The choir is a traditional robed choir with an extensive and well catalogued music library. The church hosts a well maintained Frobenius organ and upright piano. As the services vary between traditional Anglican Mass, Evensong and Taizé to informal all-age worship, there are opportunities to develop a greater range of musical styles.

The church has excellent links with St John’s Church of England Primary School which brings an opportunity to re-establish a junior choir. There are many
state and independent schools within a mile radius and the development of stronger links here would be welcomed.
The parish is fortunate to have good transport links from East Croydon and Bromley.
