St John’s Churchyard

Meadow Saxifrage (Saxifraga granulata) in St John’s Churchyard, Shirley

Jane McLauchlin June 2021

The churchyard has a good population of this attractive plant, which is also found locally in All Saints Sanderstead churchyard, the gardens at Coombe Wood and the road verges of Sanderstead Hill and Purley Downs Road. It grows in longish grass which remains unmown until early June, when it flowers. It is not very conspicuous before and after flowering. If the grass remains unmown for a few weeks after flowering it will produce and distribute its seed. The soil conditions and management of St John’s must suit it, with the path sides neatly mown and most of the rest allowed to make a colourful flowery meadow. Oxeye Daisies were particularly conspicuous on my visit of 7 June 2021. There were many patches of Saxifrage, mostly in sections B and F, with a few found in A, D and H. I have indicated these on the map from Bernard Maguire’s churchyard tree trail.

Organist/Organ Scholar Vacancy

Could you help our choir prepare for the Christmas season and help occasionally to play for our services?

We have a 3 month fixed term voluntary position which would be ideal for someone looking to develop their organ and leadership skills or who doesn’t want a long term commitment. See below link for more details and how to apply.

Information Sharing: Lunchbox Library-HAF Partnership, 4 JUNE at 4pm

We would like to invite you to this information sharing mini-event where Mthr Sarah Dawson, Vicar of St George’s, Camberwell, and her team would be sharing with us their learning and insight from the partnership Together Southwark built between Lunchbox Library programme and Southwark Council’s Holiday Activities and Food/HAF programme. The latter was named locally ‘Lambeth and Southwark’s Holiday of Food and Fun 2020’ and helped resource Lunchbox Library in the two boroughs, beyond what we would usually offer on our own.

The idea of organising this session started with a small group and now it feels right to all join in, because of conversations we have had separately.

I would like to encourage you to come with questions, including those that were raised previously.  We hope that potential volunteers in your parish would be able to join us as well to find out more about the programme and ask questions.

If your deadline to apply for the HAF funding has passed, you are still very welcome to join in the conversation.
