‘Someone jolted my elbow as I drank and said, “Je vous demande pardon,” and as I moved to give him space he turned and stared at me and I at him, and I realised, with a strange sense of shock and fear and nausea all combined, that his face and voice were known to me too well.

I was looking at myself.’

By chance, two men – one English, the other French – meet in a provincial railway station. Their resemblance is uncanny, and they spend the next few hours talking and drinking – until at last John, the Englishman, falls into a drunken stupor. It’s to be his last carefree moment, for when he wakes, his French companion has stolen his identity and disappeared. So John steps into the Frenchman’s shoes, and faces a variety of perplexing roles – as owner of a chateau, director of a failing business, head of a fractious family, and master of nothing.

This is the latest book chosen by the book club members. If you’re interested read the book and come along to the next meeting in the Tamberlin room behind the church. Next date is 19th May.

Numbrella Club

Just to give you an update on the Numberella club from last Sunday.

We had a great session, four of us played the game and grappled with maths. After so many years we had to really work hard to remember what we had just done!! Ha ha. The game is so good for seniors in so many ways, we laughed a lot and no one wanted to stop when Ros won the game with 500 ant coins!! We started with the 1st level game for 6 to 8 year olds!!

Our next club will be Sunday 5th of May in the Tamberlin room at 3.00pm.

St John’s parent and baby group

The St John’s Parent and baby group met this Saturday. We had a great session, children had such a good time no one wanted to go home!! We had four mums and one dad with much tea and chat! Lots of healthy snacks. Lucy has offered to hold our next coffee morning, date to be advised…..

Tea room

Lots of cake at the tea room yesterday. We were very busy! We had the ramblers popping in mid walk. The family of a previous vicar came in for tea, cake and a chat and a look at the church. As well as lots of our regulars.

Tea Room – new hosts

Thank you to Carol and Barry, Ann and Mike and Gillian and her daughter Lisa who have volunteered to host the tearoom on a Sunday. This with the help of Viv, Kat and Amy and Teresa and Sally who have been running the tea room for a few years now, makes a massive difference and means that we can continue to run it weekly.
