St. John’s Churchyard National Recognition

Last June St. John’s hosted a workshop where experts from ‘Caring for God’s Acre,’, CofE Environmental Group and Surry Wildlife met a group from the congregation to identify the various wildflowers growing in the Churchyard. The CfGA representatives were so impressed with the way we are maintaining the grounds that they decided to include the Churchyard in its national list of ‘Churchyards to Impress’. In this select list, St John’s has been included as one of three in the London section under the  title “Find a Flowery Burial Ground” with the following note.

“We are pulling together a selection of burial grounds from across the UK  which we would recommend visiting if you are looking for a well -managed site rich in wildlife and heritage.

All the sites listed here contain flower rich grassland. To see the flowers at their best, late May to mid or end of July is usually the most suitable time to visit. However do contact the site managers for more specific timings before you visit if this is important to you.

This list will be regularly updated. We would love to hear from you if you have enjoyed visiting any of the burial sites or if you have any recommendations of sites that could be featured”.

Well done Churchyard Team,

Bernard

Urgent Request

There is now a serious shortage of all foods at the Shrublands Food Bank. People could help by delivering food to the shop on Thursday afternoon in time for it to be sorted ready for the Friday distribution.

TKC

Thy Kingdom Come (TKC) is a global ecumenical prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray from Ascension to Pentecost for more people to come to know Jesus.

Since it began in May 2016,  God has grown TKC from a dream of possibility into a movement which unites more than a million Christians in prayer, in nearly 90% of countries worldwide, across 85 different denominations and traditions- so that friends and family, neighbours and colleagues might come to faith in Jesus Christ.

Every person, household and church are encouraged to pray during the 11 days in their own way.

It is our hope & prayer, that those who have not yet heard the Good News of Jesus Christ and His love for the world, will hear it for themselves and respond and follow Him.

Specifically, we again invite each and every Christian across the globe to pray that God’s Spirit might work in the lives of 5 people who have not responded with their ‘Yes’ to God’s call.

Whether you have joined in ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ before or not, we invite you to take part & join in.

“In praying ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ we all commit to playing our part in the renewal of the nations and the transformation of communities.” Archbishop Justin Welby

Can you Move?

TREES4CROYDON
is a campaign initiated by
Croydon Climate Action to increase tree cover in Croydon especially in areas of green space deprivation!

It is an ambitious and exciting project to ‘green up’ parts of the borough. It will provide more equitable access to trees/ green spaces in the borough, enhanced biodiversity, the potential for greater carbon capture and cooler neighbourhoods.

How does it work?

People are being asked to move – walk, run, cycle use their wheelchair – during the 5 weeks from 10th June to 15th July. You DO NOT HAVE TO SPONSOR YOURSELF OR ANYONE ELSE (although there is that option). The ask is that you move and record how many miles you cover each day or week. The miles covered will release corporate and business sponsorship as third-party funding.

Here at St John’s

  • If there is sufficient interest Barry Goodwin will register the St John’s, Shirley team with numbers TBC. He will record how many members make up our team and get the ‘app’.
  • During the 5 weeks from 10th June to 15th July you let him know how much ground you have covered (roughly) in miles and I will upload our team’s total.
  • Our total mileage will be added to the total for Croydon residents, their family & friends (people don’t have to live in the borough).

Businesses supporting Trees4Croydon will provide funding according to their pledges which will then be matched by Trees for Cities a UK charity which since 1993 has planted over 1,200,000 trees. For more information see https://www.croydonclimateaction.com/trees4croydon
