St John
the Evangelist Church, Shirley is one of the
"Churches Together in Shirley". The member
churches co-operate to run the Shirley

The Anglican churches in Ireland,
Scotland, Wales, and England have
since 1997 enjoyed an
inter-communion agreement with the
Lutheran churches of Estonia,
Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, Norway
and Iceland. The Baltic and
Scandinavian Lutheran churches, like
the Anglican churches of the
north-west Europe never lost the
Historic Succession of Bishops
linking them with the
pre-Reformation Church. All the
churches recognise the ministry of
one anothers’ churches as true
ministries of the Church. The Vicar
of St John’s is a member of the
Archbishops’ Porvoo Panel, which
encourages the further development
of links between Lutheran and
Anglican congregations. In 2008, St
John the Evangelist Shirley agreed
to a Friendship link with St John
the Evangelist Tallinn, a thriving
congregation in the centre of
Estonia’s capital city. St John’s
Tallinn is a nineteenth century
building, newly restored, and is
noted for the part it plays in the
rich musical life of Estonia.
The Pastor of St John’s Tallinn,
Jaan Tammsalu, is also Area Dean of
Tallinn.

The
Diocese of Southwark is linked with
the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe, and
our own Episcopal Area is linked
with the Diocese of Central
Zimbabwe. St John’s Shirley has its
own parish link with St Martin’s
Amaveni, a high-density township on
the edge of Kwekwe, a former mining
town in the Midlands of Zimbabwe.
The Vicar of St John’s visited St
Martin’s in 2007. The Rector of St
Martin’s is Archdeacon Gordon Mutasa,
who lives in Amaveni with his wife,
Ellen. St Martin’s is a lively
congregation with a thriving Mothers
Union. Their Youth Choir won the
Diocesan Singing Competition which
was held in Kwekwe in 2007. Situated
next to the modern brick-built
church, St Martin’s has its own
Church Primary school, which, under
its Head Teacher, Mr Rapungo, has
four hundred children on the roll.
At present, however in view of the
massive inflation in Zimbabwe, many
children are unable to get to
school, and Archdeacon Gordon has
particularly asked the people of St
John’s to pray for the school, its
children and teachers.
